In 9 AD three entire Roman legions under Varo were wiped out in Germania and their insignia were lost. A confederation of Germanic tribes under Arminius ambushed the Roman army in the Teutoburg forest and crashed the Romans. This was the greatest Roman defeat and shame for the Romans up to this time. Why was the Roman army so effective?Because it constantly adapted using weapons and battle techniques from other peoples it saw that they were more effective than its own. The Ardiaei was an Illyrian tribe that became very powerful in the 3 century BC under Agron but eventually succumbed to the Romans. They were renowned pirates raiding and ravaging the Adriatic coasts on both sides disrupting trade. The ‘Marcomanniz’, the Germanic border markmen.

The Marcomanni, marksmen in English, were a Germanic tribe living in about modern-day Bohemia in the Main river valley along with the Quadi. Their name is thought to derive from the Germanic word ‘marcomanniz’ meaning border men. A markman was a historical person that owned and lived in a mark-a boundary land.
